This remarkable project is set within a picturesque 17th-century detached country property that has retained much of its historical charm while embracing modern, elegant interiors. Nestled in its own grounds with expansive views of the countryside, this residence seamlessly blends rustic character with refined sophistication, making it a quintessential family retreat.
Upon entry, guests are welcomed into a spacious hallway with an original flagstone floor and a striking mahogany staircase. This leads to the heart of the home: a vaulted kitchen and dining space that opens to a beautifully landscaped garden with topiary and terrace, capturing far-reaching views of the surrounding countryside. The formal dining room, intimate sitting rooms, and family room provide distinct spaces for entertaining and relaxation.
The layout includes a welcoming ground floor with an entry hallway, formal dining room, family room, galleried home office, guest powder room, and a spacious kitchen-dining area with an informal seating zone. The first floor houses the luxurious master bedroom with an en-suite marble bathroom and a flexible guest bedroom that also functions as a dressing room, with views over both the rear garden and property frontage. On the top floor, two uniquely styled guest bedrooms add a personal touch, including a masculine Ralph Lauren-inspired room and a feminine space adorned with soft, warm hues.
The homeowners, a couple who value family life and sophisticated country living, envisioned a home that reflected the timeless Cotswold charm while integrating their London sensibilities. Having already collaborated with us on their London residence, they envisioned this country retreat as an elegant, practical home where cherished antiques and curated art harmonize with a serene, modern palette. The design aimed to honor the home’s architectural history, adding a contemporary flair that would feel organic and authentic.
The design team focused on a soft, natural color palette that would highlight the property’s architectural elements, such as exposed beams and original stone fireplaces. Each room’s decor was thoughtfully curated to blend antiques, bespoke furnishings, and a restrained yet richly textured fabric palette, balancing form and function. Elements like a Ralph Lauren-inspired navy palette for a top-floor bedroom and jewel-toned accents in the hallway add a tailored charm, while the overall scheme stays true to muted, elegant hues.
our approach prioritised restoring and accentuating the home’s original features, such as beams and windows, to capture the essence of a period property while ensuring practical enhancements for contemporary living. Each furnishing choice, from bronze curtain rods to handpicked lighting fixtures, was selected with patience and precision to respect the homeowners' desire for timeless, pared-down elegance.
This project stands as a testament to how thoughtful restoration and carefully sourced decor can create a sophisticated, welcoming home where history and modernity coexist harmoniously. The result is a sanctuary of warmth, family memories, and unique style—a perfect country retreat that marries tradition with understated luxury.
