After a year of hiatus, we are very excited for the return of Decorex, which is undisputedly the Goliath of design trade events in London. It is always a fantastic opportunity to network with new suppliers who may not have showrooms in London and catch up with familiar favourites. This year it feels even more special for us as, for the first time ever, we will be in the fair as an exhibitor (stand G178)! Over the past few months we have been working with carpet extraordinaire Matthew Wailes on an exclusive new line of ‘green’ rugs and we are thrilled to finally be able to debut it at a show as prominent as Decorex!

I have worked with Matthew on countless projects over the past 15 years and count him as one of our most reliable suppliers. We have created many bespoke rug designs together for specific clients, so it seemed like a natural progression in our partnership to develop a range of contemporary, stylish rugs that would not only suit our own project schemes but that would also appeal to the wider public. Moreover, both Matthew and I are advocates of sustainability within our design practices so we wanted the range to be practical, easy to clean and to not contribute to the spiralling issue of plastic pollution.

The Inspired Collection is comprised of eight unique designs, three of which will be on display at Matthew Wailes’ Decorex stand. Our section will have an “ocean” theme to shine a light on our need to preserve the beauty of nature. Traditional handmade craftsmanship in both hand-knotted and hand-tufted production is combined with sustainable materials to ensure a minimal footprint on the environment. Natural fibres like bamboo and wool (treated with non-toxic dyes) have long been celebrated for their eco qualities. Our rugs will also use a type of upcycled fibre that is constructed by melting down clear plastic waste otherwise destined for landfill (e.g. plastic bottles and fishing nets) and extruding it into a new polyester fibre. We are also sharing the stand with Objet Luxe, who have kindly loaned us a few of marine-themed objets which will complement our upcycled designs very well.

Hand-drafted by our creative team, the designs take inspiration from various sources like seascapes, meaningful places and quotidian life that reflect each individual.

Perelle Bay

Deep azure strokes liken to the tempestuous waves of Perelle Bay, crashing powerfully into each other before crumbling into white sea foam. Small glints of sunshine kiss the top of the ebbing tide, promising a return to calm.

Hari Rempah

Meaning ‘Spice Days’ in Bahasa Melayu, the abstract splatter of turmeric represents the scattered spices of vibrant markets across Malaysia, where a rich mix of cultures mingle in harmony. The deep hue of golden yellow contrasts vividly against the smoky textural background, just as certain memories stand out in our recollection of the past.

Minty

Borrowing from the unusually large and perfectly round spots on the coat of Juliette’s Jack Russell Terrier Minty, an iconic design is born. Innocently simplistic, the bold presentation of two black circles on a giant scale symbolises Minty’s steadfast and fearless nature.

Frenchmans Creek-MWLL-1333.jpg

Frenchman’s Creek

Inspired by the countless walks along the Helford River in Cornwall over lockdown. As you head westward, flashes of bright white waves break the dazzling turquoise sea while blurred buoys reflect brilliantly on the shimmering water in the distance.

Campo De'Fiori.jpg

Campo de’ Fiori

The name Campo de’ Fiori, meaning ‘fields of flowers’, dates back to the Middle Ages when the historic Roman square was a meadow. Today it is a lively historic centre packed with cafés, bars and market stalls, though we like to dream of the lavender and mimosa flowers that blossomed there once upon a time.

Scrunchie

Shiny to the eye and buttery smooth to the touch, is there a material more luxurious than silk? Even in the form of a humble scrunchie, silk invites tactile play and the endless tonal gradation between its satiny folds is most spectacularly revealed when shone under the light.

Pandangan

Along the tropical coast of South East Asia, there are islands where the natural phenomenon of ‘Blue Tears’ bloom across the ocean’s surface. Caused by tiny bioluminescent plankton that emit light when disturbed, a vast and mesmerising blue glow lap the shores in the pitch-black night.

Furbelows-RGB-HR.jpg

Furbelows

Algae like seaweed grow abundantly below the ocean surface, forming suspended underwater “forests” that serve as the foundation of all marine life. Here they dance hypnotically in slow motion, drawing us in with their rhythmic, unending swaying.

All the designs are totally customisable in size, composition and colour to work with any project. Perelle Bay, Frenchman’s Creek and Minty will be on display on our stand. If you are planning to visit Decorex next week, come by stand G178 to check out our brand new collection!

The design industry can be very wasteful so our hope is that eco-friendly rugs like our collection will be the norm one day.
