Winner of the International Property Awards 2017
New-build in the heart of Chelsea. Winner of International Property Awards. Used to be a historic builder merchant yard. We worked alongside an expert team of architects, contractors and developers to initiate a double basement dig-out that increased its value by turning into an exceptional five bedroom town house. The brief was to create an elegant and fresh scheme that echoes the classic character of the surrounding Georgian properties while bringing in bright, lively soft furnishings to make it stand out. As with many of our projects, bespoke joinery and furniture played a huge part in the design, making every room feel highly tailored and one-of-a-kind.
This project was for a developer who had bought a Chelsea site and wanted to create an important 5 story traditional Georgian style property. We gained planning permission to create a double basement and create a secluded rear terrace and 5 bedrooms.
The entrance hall was the most important area as we wanted to create the ambiance of the house as soon as you entered. By adding in panelling below the dado rail and commissioning hand painted wallpaper from Fromental. We complimented this with the addition of bronze tinted mirror and a stunning bespoke hall table. A round mirror and the two crystal wall lights were made for us by glade as a special commission.
Further down the ground floor hallway is the home office study. This is an area where we wanted to have a muted masculine palette and used the Hague blue Farrow & Ball colour on wood work and complimented this with upholstery on the two-seater sofa. We created a library feel for books and displaying object and this was back lit with led lighting and wall lights from Porta Romana with dark blue velvet shades and gilt lining.
To give privacy to this area as it overlooked the atrium at the rear of the house, we created a decorative screen which added depth and interest to the room. The desk was from Simpsons and the chair from Tom Falkner. We also added in a rug under the coffee table from and hung full length silk effect electrically operated curtains as used in the reception room.
The first-floor landing had a bay window in which we added in another study area. We wanted this to be an informal space so added a desk and a velvet upholstered chair with a button back. The printer and general storage were concealed behind joinery with antique mirrored doors and bronze detailing.
The new staircase designed by Smet links all the floors from top of house to lower ground areas. We chose a stunning marble for the entrance which then leads down into the into the limestone (name). We chose a polished mahogany style handrail and antique bronze spindles which complimented the classical style of the house.
Moving up to the top floor we created two new bedrooms and bathrooms. There had their own individual character and a family bathroom as well.
The first bedroom was a small double overlooking the rear of the property. We wanted this to have an elegant but sophisticated children’s room feel and so selected a Chelsea Textiles bedside table in a vintage lacquer. From this we added in a shaped feature headboard using a velvet chenille by Zimmer & Rhode and adding in bronze French studs. The onyx and brass lamp bases were from. Nicholas Haslam and the feature cushions on the bed used fabric by Soane and a throw by Ashley Wilde
The second guest bedroom was overlooking the street and St Lukes church and communal gardens so we chose a fresh mint leaf green for the theme in this room. Robert Langford created a long headboard for us which had large button studding and was divided into three sections for easy access. We chose bedside tables by Decours with lamps from Tyson, the soft velvet back bed cushions were fabric from Houles, made by Deanswood. And the front geometric scatters were by Tissus D’Helene. On the other side of the room, we chose a console table in a neutral faux chagrin and a decorative double framed mirror by Tom Faulkner. The Perspex lamp is vintage and the accessories are from OKA.
Going into the master bedroom brings you into a soft neutral palette. Silvery greys and accents of aubergine make the space a calm and welcoming suite of rooms. We designed a full length of wardrobe opposite the bed with the doors wrapped in a faux leather and nickel handles. We also added in a feature wall behind the bed with antique mirrored panels on either side to give the room extra width. On the mirrored panels we place the beluga glass wall lights by best and Lloyd. The fringed cushions on the bed with the feather motif are by Houles and the day bed is upholstered in a stunning fabric by Sofa & Chair Company. The wallpaper behind the day bed is hand painted on silk and adds the decorative element to the otherwise neutral palette. The dressing table was designed by JB and has a fluted front and is sprayed in a gloss lacquer finish.
The ensuite bathroom was quite narrow and so we decided to have a free-standing burnished steel feature bath from Drummonds. The whole bathroom had wall to wall book matched calacatta marble and we carried that into the walk-in shower and around the vanity units. We used venetian wall mirrors to create the storage we needed and the bespoke grey oak fluted front to the double vanity complimented the master bedroom dressing table detailing. We added in wall lights by Collier Webb and brassware by the water monopoly.
